PCI was created by experienced hospitality professionals and educators, not a corporation. And in our years of experience around the world in the hospitality industry, we found that many restaurant and hotel college students were spending too much money, and years in school only to enter the hospitality industry unprepared.
Hospitality and hotel jobs are hands on, yet most hotel and restaurant management courses and food and beverage education and training keep students behind a desk, with their heads in a book. Not only do they lack hands-on food and beverage training, but many of their classes are filled with non-hospitality students and not focused specifically on hospitality. For example, at a college that does not specialize in hospitality, the accounting class will be a general accounting class, and not one specifically designed for the hotel, travel, restaurant, or food and beverage industries. This dilutes the focus of the class and further hinders your ability to permanently retain the information. Plus, many teachers are merely academics with little actual experience working in the field. The result for hospitality students coming out of these restaurant and hotel colleges is that they are behind the times, and have almost no hands-on training in hospitality related fields such as customer service, the culinary arts or wine & spirits.
This leaves them helpless when it comes to managing a restaurant, bar, or banquet, three essential areas in the hospitality profession.
